Retreat!

5:30 a.m.:
I am beginning an eight-day silent Buddhist meditation retreat today, so there will be no new posts for a week.I am up early so that I can drive out to the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Mass., before the predicted blizzard makes travel impossible. Originally they asked us to arrive between 3 and 5 p.m., but because of the blizzard warning, IMS asked us to arrive as early as possible.

I am looking forward to being snowed in at the beautiful center in Western Massachusetts. Regardless of the weather, I am looking forward to a week without any Internet, cell phone, Facebook, and the increasingly frantic connected world we live in. Instead I will be immersed in Noble Silence, peace, and loving-kindness. The lead teacher is Sharon Salzberg, the world's premier teacher of "metta meditation." Metta is a Pali word usually translated as "loving-kindness."
